Hilton Garden Inn, Morgantown, WV
Sponsored by the West Virginia Prevention Research Center.
September 20th is the last day to register!
Idress Gooden, WV PRC Community Partnership Board Co-Chair and Deputy Director for Adolescent Health for RESA 7, will present how individuals from poverty, middle and upper economic classes think and act differently based upon the social cues or “hidden rules” that govern how people think and interact in society. Based upon Dr. Ruby K. Payne’s book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, participants in this workshop will gain perspective and cultural competency for working with West Virginia communities. Topics covered will include the role of language-from formal to casual registers, identifying the resources of an individual, patterns in case studies, story structure, the importance of relationship building and the hidden rules of each economic class.
Workshop Objectives:
- Explore the five Registers of Language and identify the difference between casual and formal language as they relate to work and school.
- Identify the eight resources which can better assist individuals in moving from poverty: financial, emotional, mental, spiritual, physical, support systems, relationships/role models, and knowledge of the hidden rules.
- Recognize that hidden rules exist between and among groups and economic classes. These rules are the unspoken cues and habits of a group which impact achievement in schools and success in the workplace.
