What is REDCap?

REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a secure, web-based application designed exclusively to support data capture for research studies. The tool is easy to use, free, and your data is securely kept on Biomedical Informatics servers, in the secure data center run by the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) physically located in room G130 in Erma Byrd located behind the health science campus.

The REDCap application allows users to build and manage online surveys and databases quickly and easily. The whole process of building a form or survey can be completed in a matter of minutes using only a web browser. The REDCap application is live and available for usage by WVCTSI members. If you are not a WVCTSI member, you can register here. Once a WVCTSI member, you can request access to REDCap. (Detailed instructions on getting REDCap access can be found below)

Is anyone using this tool?

Over 1,300 people have used REDCap at West Virginia University through WVCTSI.

How is REDCap Supported?

  • WVCTSI supports REDCap
  • WVCTSI offers monthly REDCap Help Clinics to help people understand how to use REDCap as well as answer any questions researchers may have

What are the advantages of using REDCap?

  • This tool is useful for small to medium sized studies to support effective data capture
  • Easy and intuitive to design, develop, and use data collection forms/screens
  • Screen layouts are clear and simple to navigate
  • Interactive editing includes range checks, data type checks, valid date checks, and branching logic
  • REDCap provides audit trails for tracking the history of data entry and revision
  • REDCap permits downloads of data to Excel, PDF, SAS, SPSS, Stata and R
  • REDCap is being used extensively by other CTSAs, including Vanderbilt, Mayo Clinic, and Harvard
  • There are many training videos available built throughout REDCap
  • REDCap supports web-based randomization
  • REDCap’s Data Quality module supports reporting on problems with data consistency within and across forms
  • In projects in which REDCap’s Data Resolution Workflow (often called 'data queries' in clinical trials and studies) is enabled, users are allowed to use a workflow for documenting the process of resolving issues with data in the project.

How can I get access to REDCap?

WVCTSI has updated their instructions on how to request REDCap services such as an account creation, consultation request, or REDCap questions. We also require that all prospective REDCap users to request their own account through iLab so they can consent to the new REDCap Usage Agreement. The instructions are as follows:

New Instructions on new REDCap Account Creation Procedures
